Joy's photographic journey began at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York, where she discovered that photography is far more than the act of making images—it is a way of preserving the essence of people, memories, emotions, and the stories that connect us. Through rigorous training and years of practice during photography's transition from film to digital, she developed a strong technical foundation and a distinctive artistic vision, enabling her work to convey honesty, authenticity, and emotional depth.
While refining her craft, Joy launched her freelance career and established a photography studio in Manhattan. What began as a working studio gradually evolved into a vibrant creative hub—a place where artists gathered, exhibitions came to life, meaningful collaborations flourished, and art was celebrated with a deep sense of appreciation. These experiences profoundly shaped Joy's philosophy of photography, art, and life, reinforcing her belief that every photograph tells a story capable of cultivating human connection, inspiring creativity, and fostering meaningful dialogue between art and lived experience.
Her first book, Faces and Stages (2008), emerged from a remarkable two-year journey across China. Through intimate portraits, traditional landscapes, and glimpses of everyday life, the project documented a society undergoing profound transformation while introducing her lifelong commitment to visual storytelling. It marked the beginning of her pursuit to create photographs that preserve both the spirit of a place and the humanity of its people.
Timeless portraiture remains at the heart of Joy’s artistic practice. She creates expressive, enduring images that transcend cultures and generations, soulfully revealing the shared humanity within every individual.
Her latest book, Sahasrara to Sahara (2025), invites viewers to pause, reflect, and look beyond the visible. It embodies her belief that photography is not merely a way of seeing, but also a way of listening—with sensitivity, presence, and a deep commitment to conscious living.
