The Mirror of Life

Exhibition Statement - Joy Wai

Mirrors play a fundamental role in our existence, especially in the realm of spiritual growth. When we see our reflection, it serves as a gentle reminder of our true identity until we fully awaken to the essence of life and the profound truths at the core of our being.

I believe mirrors are gifts from God and the universe. They offer us the opportunity to understand ourselves more deeply, guiding us toward personal growth and self-discovery. Yet they must be used wisely, for a mirror can also become a source of distortion. When it begins to redefine our lives through cultural lenses rather than truth, it is essential to pause with awareness. Such moments invite reflection and the possibility of returning to our authentic path.

The truth is that we can recognize our souls—our true selves—without the need for a mirror's reflection. As we continue discovering ourselves as unidentified, ever-unfolding beings, the higher self becomes the ultimate mirror, revealing truth and peace from the heart center. In this way, we come to realize that we are, in essence, our own sources.

This exhibition presents a collection of images that explore the dance between light and shadow as they move alongside us. The works are thoughtfully curated from different chapters of my journey through several cities—places that have shaped who I am today. I am deeply grateful for my lens, which allows me to witness the world with clarity, unfiltered and free from judgment.

Life is marked by dramatic shifts, shaped by both its highs and lows. We inhabit many places and encounter countless individuals, each leaving an indelible imprint on our lives. Over time, memories gradually fade, giving way to new experiences and fleeting moments. Yet within our hearts, there remains a sacred space where we feel unburdened, inviting us to ask: Why do I still hold on to certain memories and the people connected to them? Do they remember me?

Those faces and gestures remain intertwined with unforgettable sounds and scents, echoing the vitality of life itself. It is often during periods of transformation that awareness and self-discovery emerge, as we come to terms with the loneliness that has quietly accompanied us for so long. In remembering who we once were, we begin to understand who we are today and embrace who we are becoming.

Ultimately, we carry profound love within our hearts—to live a life of acceptance, presence, and gratitude.

Like a vivid dream, there came a day when I became a New Yorker and began studying Digital Media and Photography at the International Center of Photography (ICP). I often reflect on the moment I first picked up my Canon 5D and started photographing every day. It was a revelation—both in my growing fascination with this new digital camera and in the remarkable images I found myself creating. Life became far more intriguing than I had ever imagined.

When passion and energy ignite within us, they create an exhilarating chaos that feels profoundly liberating. Even during that time, I sometimes feared losing sight of my identity—where I came from and where I was headed. Yet what I remember most is holding my camera, running through the streets of New York City, exploring and creating a new life as a child, endlessly captivated by the world around me.

I am deeply grateful for that enchanted chapter of my life. It remains one of my most cherished experiences, known only to my heart, and one that quietly molded me into the grounded person and artist I am today—shaped naturally and spiritually through this transformative journey.
